What is Accreditation?

The ISO Accreditation is the process of providing recognition to an organization for its competence in performing specific tasks in which certification of competency, authority, or credibility is presented. Accreditation is a voluntary, third party-reviewed process. Organizations that issue credentials or certify third parties against official standards are themselves formally accredited by accreditation bodies (such as UKAS); hence they are sometimes known as "accredited certification bodies". The accreditation process ensures that their certification practices are acceptable, typically meaning that they are competent to test and certify third parties, behave ethically and employ suitable quality assurance.

It involves the assessment of technical competence of organizations in providing conformity assessment service(s). Conformity assessment services include testing, certification (management systems/ product/ personnel) and inspection. Accreditation also applies to calibration laboratories, proficiency testing and production of certified reference material.

How Laboratories/Organization Get ISO/IEC Accreditation?

If your organisation carries out assessment activities such as tests, controls, measurements, analyses, inspections, technical audits, verifications, etc. you will probably be able to request for ISO/IEC Accreditation.

ISO/IEC accreditation is applicable to any organization that conducts assessment activities regardless of the legal nature of the organization, whether public or private, and regardless of its size, whether it performs other activities or if the assessment activity is a service provided by the organisation for its clients or carried out as part of its internal processes (quality controls, inspections of the reception of materials, control of suppliers, etc.).

For access to accreditation, you must identify the activity for which you would like accreditation and demonstrate that your organisation meets the ISO/IEC Accreditation Standards that best fits the activity. Therefore, the first step is to identify the relevant standard.

On accreditation of laboratory by recognized body the test report of laboratory gets global acceptance due to such mutual recognition. The laboratory select appropriate accreditation body for ISO/IEC standards either recognized in the country or any globally recognized body. And send their application with manual and list of scope parameters. The ISO/IEC accreditation body will review the manual and fix up the accreditation on site audit dates. They witness the test or measurements as well as review the records and after successful completion of audit the laboratory is getting such accreditation.
